Had an epic end to my trip in Florida fishing the surf with one of my favorite youtubers BlacktipH! My buddy Andrew and I met Josh (BlacktipH) at his apartment early in the morning to grab the gear for the day. I was in charge of holding the rods and I was shocked to see the difference in weight between the bass rods I'm used to carrying and the sheer mass of the ocean rods we were going to fish with.
I struggled to lift the rods off the ground but thankfully we were fishing in Josh's backyard off the beach so I didn't wear myself out too bad for the epicness that was about to happen :P As we approached the beach all I could see anywhere were baitfish flickering in the water. There were hundreds of thousands of mullet littering the water, and every ten seconds you'd see an explosion of a bluefish, jack, or tarpon trying to feast on the snack sized fish.
I'd never seen anything like it, and I was super anxious to wet my line in the water but first we had to shoot a short intro for BlacktipH's channel. As soon as the cameraman said "cut," I grabbed my bass rod that I'd been fishing with all week, tied on a topwater lure, and sprinted to the beach to capitalize on some of the action!
For half an hour the fishing was absolutely ridiculous. I got blowups on every single cast I made hooking into numerous jack and bluefish. Often times I would hook into a fish just seconds after my bait touched the water. I got worn out quickly, as saltwater fish fight many times harder than freshwater ones.
Despite arm fatigue and hand cramps, I caught and unhooked like a man possessed! My favorite catch of the day was watching a school of bluefish annihilate trapped mullet in two inches of water. Unfortunately, I was so caught up in all the excitement I forgot to check my lens for water spots :P
After we caught dozens of fish we decided to switch species and cut up some of the bluefish we caught to fish for sharks. Unfortunately, the shark bite wasn't on that day but that one hour of topwater action was one of the most insane things I've ever experienced in my life! I'll definitely be looking forward to fishing with BlacktipH in the future and learning more about the saltwater beasts he loves to catch!
