Overview - Andrew and I hit one of our favorite canals in the morning (sorry, the location is a secret :P). We prefer to fish around the culvert because the fish stack up around the moving water. We've caught largemouth, peacock, snook, gar, cichlids, and big mouth sleeper (super rare fish) from this one area.

As soon as we walked down to our spot, we noticed the water wasn't moving nearly as fast as when we fished the spot last time we were there (late February 2015). I thought that would have a negative impact on the fishing but as soon as I peered into the water I saw a fleet of big cichlids and an army of gar facing the culvert waiting for anything edible to drift by.

The fishing was fast and furious, I started off catching fish on a popper, while Andrew slayed the cichlids and gar on one of his go-to lures, the rapala x-rap. Around 8:30 or so, the topwater bite slowed down considerably so I switched to some live shiners to pick up the less aggressive fish. As soon as the shiner hit the water, a gar or cichlid would run up to it and destroy it within 30 seconds. We had two dozen shiners with us, and by 9:00 our shiner stock was depleted :P

I had my subscriber tournament later the same day, so we decided conserve some energy and rest up for the afternoon/evening session at the C-14 canal.
