Overview - Tough day on the water, the morning bite was pretty strong, getting about 20 strikes in the first 90 minutes but landing only two fish on moving baits. After about 11 am, I went fishless for almost 6 hours, struggling to generate even the slightest nibble despite changing techniques, amount of weight used, location, depth, ect. I finally managed to complete the challenge at about 8 pm. Fished over 12 hours in this session, making it my second longest fishing session ever. I once fished for 24 hours straight in a charity fishing event known as the "24-hour fish-a-thon." Me and 3 of my friends placed second in the event, landing over 600 fish between the four of us.

The MTB slam challenge is an awesome idea, it helped me improve as an angler by forcing me outside my comfort zone. I caught my first ever bass this year on a soft plastic swimbait (I rarely use swimbaits), and I had to explore different parts of the lake to find areas that would match with each of MTB's baits. In fact, of the 5 fish I caught, 3 of them came from areas I never fished before on Lake Elkhorn (fished here about 5 times). I had to be creative on a couple of the baits, using a mojo rig then fishing the popz as a trailer on the BD spinnerbait to increase its bulkiness and help it get noticed in the dark conditions.

My first MTB slam was a blast, even though I caught 5 dinks and fished for over 12 hours, it felt as though I fished less than 2 hours and that I won the bassmaster classic when I caught that final fish :P. By nature, I'm very competitive and don't like losing so I honestly would've stayed out past dark to catch that last fish if needed.

Out of the box, my favorite bait was the BD spinnerbait. It ran true, had quality blades and a limber skirt that pulsed upon retrieval. My favorite feature of the bait was its head design, it had the profile of a 1/4 ounce spinnerbait even though it's rated as 1/2 ounce because a large portion of the weight is located under the skirt. This design helped me retrieve the bait through grass and keep the bait clean.

The lipless crankbait was a solid performer, as was the soft swimbait. The bonehead lizard lacked a bit of action compared to my normal zoom lizard, but that actually isn't a bad thing when fish are sluggish in really warm or really cool water temps.
